fatima’s needles, 2018, acrylic on canvas, 100 x 149 cm

Last October my right ear just suddenly blocked up. It felt like I had a cotton ball in my ear, and it wasn’t subsiding with time. I finally went to a doctor (this was in London) who told me that my ears were fine and that, I will quote, ‘It’s all in your head’. Hearing this, while at the same time going through anxiety and depression, my heart sank. After exhausting myself googling ‘blocked ear’, ‘blocked ear from anxiety’, ‘blocked ear during peri-menopause’ I decided to see an acupuncturist. I booked with Fatima Juma at the FSRC and I think that was the smartest decision I’d made in that tumultuous period of my life. My ear isn’t completely unblocked but the way it is right now is something I can live with. This painting is the first of three dedicated to my wonderful once-upon-a-time acupuncturist. Here’s to Fatima and her needles!
