I’m drawing this for the next book in my series. The theme and title of the book is ‘Chores’. This time I wanted to include one of my storybook illustrations and this one will be it.

BirdTalk featuring Ghadah Alkandari: in other words, me and Bianca on a Sunday afternoon.

Thanks, Bianca, that was fun! And Mohammed Al-Saeed, brilliant photography (or is it cinematography?). I’m very impressed. Oh, and I followed Bianca’s advice and watched most of this on mute. I just can’t bear to hear myself talk. It’s physically impossible.

Filed under: Step By Step, Stories of Eves, Video | Tags: , , , ,

This is a video I made with my son, Khaled, from footage I had taken of myself painting Eve Shreds the Note. Actually, he did most of the work; I just sat there trying to be helpful but ended up hindering his efforts to get on with it.

Music by (in order): Elbow/The Birds, Aimee Mann/Great Beyond, Menomena/Evil Bee, Kate Bush/King of the Mountain and Gary Laswell/Farewell

I’m going through a very difficult time in my life at the moment. When I have times like these, I tend to eschew brushes and other means of transporting paint onto canvas; in other words, I use my hands. Or I paint on my hands. Sometimes I also paint on my arms and legs. Maybe it’s just my own version of self-mutilation. At least I’m not cutting myself, right? Not on purpose anyway.

After I painted my fingers using my black paint (which I’m kicking myself in the ass for; my supply of black acrylic paint is quickly dwindling), I took some photos, then decided to make a little video, and finally added sound, all this with the help of my super-hero son, Khaled Abu-Ghazaleh. I liked the segment so much that I’ve decided to make a full-length video to this, one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands: Cough Coughing by Menomena*. So look out for that, coming sooner or later.

*When searching for the song (which I had on my iTunes but needed online), I discovered that there is already an official Cough Coughing video! It won’t deter me from making my own, though.

PrettyGreenBullet Exhibition Drawing

Because I’m always showing videos and slideshows of my works in progress, I thought it would be a good idea to turn the tables and photograph others and their creative processes. So I set up a little work station and let people do their thing. Artists include Yasmeen Dimashkie, Yousef Abu-Ghazaleh, Khaled Abu-Ghazaleh, Zainab Abu-Ghazaleh, Omar Dimashkie, his friends Andrew and Evan, Lina Al-Adwani, Ali Sultan, Hamad AlSaab, Thuraya Al-Baqsami, Mai Alnakib, Rania Al-Nakib, Hind Al-Adwani, Hussa Al-Hassawi, Aseel AlYagoub, Sharifa Abdulsalam, Monira Al Qadiri, Mohammed Al-Kouh, Hassan Alkandari, Yasmine Alkandari, Waleed Shaalan, Siba Orabi and Suzan Al-Mutawa. I know there were a couple more who participated, but I didn’t get the names. Thanks, everyone. I love people who cooperate and get into the spirit of things! Cross the bridge for sectioned photos of this piece. (more…)

seven and a half minute face

And this is how I wreck my pens. I drew this yesterday to Primavera by Ludovico Einaudi. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s all new age-y but I was in the mood. I must say that it was crazy trying to get a more or less finished face in seven minutes and a half. This was my second attempt. Cross the bridge for photos. (more…)

New Painting|Untitled Yet

To use the term of the decade, this video was a total fail (cross the bridge for the video, I changed things around a bit). But I thought I’d post it anyway because it’s kinda clutzy like me. And it actually has a few informative seconds if you filter out the mistakes, pauses and technical difficulties. Feel free to fast forward through though because it’s very, very long.

As for the painting, it’s the first of a collection I’m painting for my upcoming exhibition at the Tilal Gallery in March. I’m not sure where exactly I’ll be going with the show, but I know I want a collection of 18-22 paintings. I also want there to be a certain thread going through the paintings, possibly a story. It’s going to be fun and exciting. (more…)

Why it’s Important to Play

larvae, 2010, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 40cm x 40cm

I was feeling very organic last weekend so decided to go out and buy some untreated canvas and play around a little. I also remembered that I had two or three potatoes once destined for a hearty mash, just sitting around in the fridge. Who knew that this would be their destination. I made three of these ‘pictures’.

Scroll down for the video, sit back and enjoy, preferably with a bag of no-name potato chips.

Cross the bridge for more pictures, taken by my dear friend Cooper. Thank you, Cooper! (more…)

An Experimental Video I Did Eons Ago

This is a video I made in 2001 for an exhibition I had at the Dar Al-Funoon Gallery. I recommend that you view this with music playing. It’s a pretty long video with mistakes and glitches. Therefore, also recommended is doing something else at the same time. Enjoy the viewing and non-viewing.

Grow Up & Blow Away

I’m posting this again (and probably not for the last time) in case you missed it or…miss it. I just want more people to see it. I feel it’s a shame that I worked really hard on it and that it should get swept under the most recent posts pile. Sort of like taking a few hours to create a dish for someone who will eat it in five minutes. Well, I’m rife with gastricular analogies this morning.

I would appreciate if anyone can tell me how to re-announce a post rather than having to do something like what I did just now. Is there a way I can keep this video on my homepage? Help! (more…)
