This is a video I made with my son, Khaled, from footage I had taken of myself painting Eve Shreds the Note. Actually, he did most of the work; I just sat there trying to be helpful but ended up hindering his efforts to get on with it.
Music by (in order): Elbow/The Birds, Aimee Mann/Great Beyond, Menomena/Evil Bee, Kate Bush/King of the Mountain and Gary Laswell/Farewell

And another opening passes by. I wish I could have enjoyed it more but I was (and still am) in the midst of nursing what feels like a stomach virus again. For someone who takes pleasure in food, that sucks. I hope, however, that for those of you who didn’t attend, you enjoy the photos taken last night by my brother, Mohammed. For those of you who were there, I thank you. It means a lot to me that you came. (more…)

Ten days left. Or is it nine? I’m starting to feel a bit of the buzz I usually get a few weeks before any exhibition. The butterflies I usually reserve for opening day. That’s when I can’t sit still and it’s best to avoid me. Cross the bridge for a map to Gallery Tilal. (more…)

Jana came in this morning to photograph the complete Stories of Eves collection. I tried to set up the studio the best way I could to achieve maximum efficiency. I love to feel that I can win over time, so I’m always finding ways to reduce it. So much that I think I can be a little annoying. Jana and I worked like a machine and I am so happy with the results. The photos do my paintings justice. Thank you, J!

i don't know if you remember, but i said i would do two more of these psychedelicky eves and i just finished numbers three and four last night. i'm sure they will look a lot more formidable with a less cluttered background (ie. in the gallery)! this morning, these four paintings acted as large, flat building blocks for me. the high-contrast, colorful rays lend themselves to being re-formatted and re-interpreted. as always, i'm turning things into fun and games. i'll never grow up

I think she’s finished. I put a note in her hand because her expression and intent gaze reminded me of how as children, in class, we would focus on the teacher’s face while subtly flicking the note to its intended recipient.

it's pretty cloudy outside, so the lighting in my studio's a bit dim; that's why i couldn't take a proper photo of this painting. once i get these photographed professionally, i'll post it as part of the whole collection. i like this photo because of the two eves peeping from behind!

As a child, I always played hide-and-go-seek with a little trepidation and absolutely no sense of fun and game. How could anyone enjoy a game where you had to hide in a lonely, isolated place while someone sought you out? It’s far from pleasant. As for the seeker, how terrifying and just as existentially creepy. It’s like a horror shot from some thriller movie around every corner. No fun at all and absolutely senseless. (more…)

Two of the three paintings I’m currently working on are giving me hell. If I could, I’d punch them both and get it over with. I’m struggling to get them out of the rut they’re in. But I know we’ll all pull through. Trust and patience. (more…)
