qutra. protect me against the dusty storms

I’ve been working all morning on three paintings so forgive me if I diverge a little. As you may already know, I’ve been working a lot with collage; and collage means glue. Glue sticks to everything and is amazing to peel off. So I peeled my dried up chunk of glue off the yogurt tub I was using and tacked it to a picture of one of my paintings, on my cork board. And with a stroke of serendipity, I got this result which I am very happy with. Mind you, the fact that I’m so happy with this could possibly be another side-effect of glue.

the public library i share with my neighbors

I’ve started on a new project involving lots and lots of paper. As you know, I get quite distracted when embarking on a new experiment and I start thinking about things like architecture and insects. Paper is a wonderful thing, and often I like to shrink myself to the size of my thumb and pretend I live in a wonderful world where pristine beaches and public libraries are compulsory. (more…)

because i am

It sucks when you feel like you’re shunned. I know I am loved by the people who matter, but sometimes I want the people who don’t matter to me anymore to matter again. I want them to matter to me because they should matter to me. I don’t want to be rejecting them in my heart and mind, just to protect myself from the pain they inflict on me and others. That is not normal, but I’m afraid it’s going to have to be my normal from now on.

Lub-Dub|The Drawings

the spiraling flower

When I started the video Lub-Dub, I decided to use tracing paper which I thought would be both versatile and practical (since I don’t use proper animation software). I also love the fierce crinkle, especially after being heavily sketched on (I did suffer not a paper scratch, but a vicious paper stab-never crumple up heavy tracing paper, it creates very, very sharp and dangerous points) As the work progressed, any discarded drawings were sloppily placed to my left, creating a glueless 3D collage. And as reliable as ever, my camera was to my right and ready to be clicked.

We had quite a huge dust storm a few days ago. The next day I found this paper in one of my plants. Just a single sheet of paper, blown away from its book, among other windswept jetsam and flotsam. I picked it up and thought: hmm, I wonder what bit of knowledge/nonsense has been dropped into my bushes. I must say I did a few literary double-takes when my eyes started picking up the words on the page: plants, seeds, rain, semen, birth. Apparently this page is from a chapter or section comparing the planet Earth and its plants to a woman giving birth. Other passages include the sperm of man being compared to raindrops. Anyway I saw the whole thing as a sign somehow and stuck a pretty picture on it.

Why it’s Important to Play

larvae, 2010, charcoal and acrylic on canvas, 40cm x 40cm

I was feeling very organic last weekend so decided to go out and buy some untreated canvas and play around a little. I also remembered that I had two or three potatoes once destined for a hearty mash, just sitting around in the fridge. Who knew that this would be their destination. I made three of these ‘pictures’.

Scroll down for the video, sit back and enjoy, preferably with a bag of no-name potato chips.

Cross the bridge for more pictures, taken by my dear friend Cooper. Thank you, Cooper! (more…)

I like to play. A LOT. But sometimes when I play I break things. And this time I broke my camera. I did manage to take a few shots before it fell and a couple after, until it zonked out completely on me. If you look at the black and white photo, the bottom right hand corner is a little hazy. That, it later dawned on me, was because I broke the lens. (more…)

A Poem By Reem

This is a tiny video I made, inspired by and ‘illustrated’ for Reem Al-Ali’s poem Untitled [lesbian]. I am including the actual poem below because to my horror, the poem is illegible. So sorry, Reemy, I’ll do better next time.

Untitled [lesbian]

Together they crawled into a left-out space,

and made it their own…

They were both different and the same,

to it they were drawn…

At the dark red they both glanced,

and laughed at an order gone and thrown.

From the Bspot|How to Dismantle a 65 Kilo Crate & What to Do With It|Originally Posted July 11, 2009

so unassuming

A few days ago I received some of my paintings and drawings from The Third Line gallery in Dubai. The crate which carried my paintings weighed 65 kilos. The smaller one was much lighter but also heavy. To facilitate disposal, I decided to dismantle the crate piece by piece. The wood and foam were in excellent condition so I called my friend, H and asked if she wanted to come by and see if she could use any of it. (more…)

Black Sketchbook|Drawings & Scraps

the most important building in the world

These are three pages from my black sketchbook. I bought the sketchbook a few years ago because I liked the novelty of it, and I knew that I would have to somehow work around the problem of drawing on black pages. One of the ‘projects’ I gave myself was this one: I asked my friend Simon to cut me some snippets from the paper he had just finished reading (which was The Guardian Weekly). Then I gave myself the challenge of ‘ad libbing’ some sketches while incorporating into them the scraps he gave me. I think I did a pretty good job. I was pretty happy with the results anyway. I made this five second clip while fooling around with my scanner and stop-motion animation using Powerpoint. It was the inspiration for the name of this blog. The green bullets are actually wall plugs in case nobody noticed. The clip is called Ina & the Green Bullets

Eek! The video hasn’t uploaded right. Hmm. This will be fixed soon (fingers crossed and hope hope hoping!)
