ruby & her three yellow roses, february 27, 2011, multi-media on canvas
Sunday morning is usually the day I like to play. I haven’t had this chance for a while because of preparations for my upcoming Stories of Eves exhibition at the Tilal Gallery. It felt great to work on a small canvas, without a deadline or the pressures that come with it. The name ‘Ruby’ just popped into my head as I started to type the title of this piece.

the gallery and farida's ubiquitous water bottles
I know I said the last time that I finally made it to the first installment of The Sultan Gallery’s 50/20 Exhibition. But this time I finally, finally made it. It’s been a week since the show opened. I like the whole idea of having two parts of a show, version one and version two. It appeals to my sense of applying different elements to a single diagram or model. Not a sequel but a segment which completes another.
*If you scroll down, you will see that there is an asterisk after Thomas Modeen’s work. I’m doing the asterisk thing kind of backwards. Please click here for better photos (and a thorough explanation) of his work.

good-bye for now

i said farewell to my twenty-four paintings today. i'm not sure why, but i'm feeling quite down in the dumps. and the whole thing feels very anti-climactic because there's a month left until the opening of my exhibition, so it feels like i'm missing the excitement i usually feel right before opening night

Photographing Eves on a Monday

eve takes a profile pic
Jana came in this morning to photograph the complete Stories of Eves collection. I tried to set up the studio the best way I could to achieve maximum efficiency. I love to feel that I can win over time, so I’m always finding ways to reduce it. So much that I think I can be a little annoying. Jana and I worked like a machine and I am so happy with the results. The photos do my paintings justice. Thank you, J!

i don't know if you remember, but i said i would do two more of these psychedelicky eves and i just finished numbers three and four last night. i'm sure they will look a lot more formidable with a less cluttered background (ie. in the gallery)! this morning, these four paintings acted as large, flat building blocks for me. the high-contrast, colorful rays lend themselves to being re-formatted and re-interpreted. as always, i'm turning things into fun and games. i'll never grow up
