i usually paint my backgrounds with this cerulean blue to block out the noise. and i'm often tempted to keep the background blue. it's not my favorite blue to paint with but something about the plastic-like feel and solidness of the color complements the more tactile and textured aspect of my figures. this time, i might just succumb to that temptation

eve & me

eve and me. the photo was taken a few weeks before i did my painting on the left
My brother, Tareq, was over for lunch this afternoon. After we ate I saw him clicking away at his phone. Then he asked me, “Ghadah, do you have a painting of Eve at her computer?” and I said yes. Then he showed me a photo he had taken of me a couple of months ago and the similarity really shocked me. I know it’s a fairly common occurrence to be seated at one’s computer, but the thing that struck me was the composition, the long flowing dresses and the fact that my brother had taken a photo which I painted a few weeks later.

Eve on TV

eve earlier this morning, before the arrival of the ktv crew
I was visited this morning by the Kuwait Television crew (Rashed Bader, Amani Al-Enezy, Ahmed Al-Mutairy and Abdulaziz Alhadad), who came in to film a segment for a new variety show to air next year. I was quite nervous because I had to talk about my work in Arabic, and unfortunately I’m not too familiar with the whole art jargon in any other language but English. The whole process took around two hours, and I was surprisingly easy with painting for film (I’ve done it before but that was me filming me). (more…)

I recently found this sketchpad under a pile of books. It had always been there-I see it all the time-but I never thought to look in it. What I found was a barely filled book of drawings, but more outstandingly, ideas; from being the King of my own little island (not a Queen, and don’t ask me why) to the embryonic stage of a plan to direct an Oscar Wilde play. It’s an older sketchbook, dating from the late 1990s. I know that because my son was a baby in the sketch of him sleeping. The book is large and a bit awkward. I don’t know if I’ll ever use it again for anything, it’s too big.
