a life molecule: i usually start off these pages in an orderly fashion and a consistent pattern. after a while, ennui sets in and i automatically shift to a less organized structure. the base-in this case the circles-is still quite linear, like polka-dots on a dress. soon, however, the paradigm shifts a little and i allow for a bit of deviation. but after all the natural course it takes, is it truly random anymore?

To all of this, my mom’s repeated words to me, “Just let it go! Ish3alaich minhum?” What? Just let men stare at me because they feel it’s their divine right? And it’s not as if they find me attractive because my looks don’t appeal to the Kuwaiti, Middle Eastern, Indian, or Philipino (actually they don’t stare at all) man. I want to ask them, “Are you staring because you find me beautiful, or are you just attracted to all bipedal creatures with boobs?” Really, and I want to take notes when he’s answering my question, which he will initially regard as rhetorical but will realize that I’m waiting for an answer, pen in hand, to record his reply.
Mom, I’m starting to do some crazy shit. I’ve given back glares, stopped to ask if there was anything on me that wasn’t supposed to be, and done the ‘hmmm? did you say something?’ act. These men are really shameless and have no idea. So sorry, I can’t just let it go.

Please remember that Fairuz is on display at the Boushahri Gallery for a week. The gallery is located in Salmiya, Baghdad Street, Building 36. Park your car in the back, there’s usually lots of space. If you’re walking, you can go straight through the side door (by the camera store). Morning hours are 10am-1pm, evening hours are 5pm-9pm except for Thursdays. The gallery is closed on Fridays.

I just discovered a new love. It’s more like a tantric obsession with these impossibly irresistible shapes. I get so absorbed by drawing these triangular clusters that I lose track of time and space. And then the triangle gets so ridiculous that my hand forgets how to draw one and I have to think: how do you draw a triangle? (more…)
